We inherited a ‘baby dresser’ from my sister-in-law recently, in preparation for life’s biggest project.

We have white walls here, and the dresser was also quite monochromatic, so I figured I would liven it up a bit with a pop of color.

I am a huge fan of generative AI for personal artwork like this. Ethics aside for the art-world as a whole, I think these are the places where things like midjourney are perfect. I could spend an hour or so refining a style and color palette for a child-friendly drawing, and then copy it out by hand onto the ‘canvas’. I’ll include below some of my prompts and results. Weirdly, the one I settled on was from quite an early batch of results.

Below is the final design, and the process of transferring it over. I simply made a 10% grid over the image, and a matching grid over the dresser, and hand-drew the image as best I could. I went for a minimal number of colors, with bright contrasting tones.

I wasnt happy with the results with the paint I started with, so in the end I had to shell out for some relatively expensive matte acryllic paint. You really get what you pay for here. I also gently scuffed up the white paint to give the acryllic something to hold on to.

Finally, I sprayed a coat of urithane sealant over everything to hopefully protect a bit against scratching.

The dresser clashes horribly with everything else in our house. I love it!
